In an interview with Polska Agencja Prasowa, Krzysztof Wielicki recalls a dramatic moment from the winter expedition to Broad Peak in 2013, when, after losing contact with Maciej Berbeka, he became certain that in those conditions it meant a death sentence. This borderline situation exposes the essence of a leader's responsibility in an extreme environment, where every second of delay in the decision-making process generates irreversible consequences for the entire structure. In corporate management realities, a leader's loneliness manifests in the necessity to accept the fact that not all operational variables are under direct control from the base level. Effective leadership in VUCA conditions requires building teams that possess the autonomy and survival instinct allowing for a retreat even in the face of imminent success. The true greatness of a board is revealed not at the moment of triumph, but in the ability to bear the weight of failure, which is an integral element of high-risk innovative strategies. The ethics of leadership in chaos forces the C-level to understand that delivering results at all costs is a strategic error that can destabilize the foundation of the organization. Every risk mitigation process must consider the human factor as the most fragile, yet most valuable component of long-term success.
