Key lesson

Definition of failure:

During a meeting in Český Těšín, Krzysztof Wielicki formulated a radical, yet fundamental thesis for leaders: in extreme conditions, the only true failure is death, while a retreat from below the summit is merely failing to achieve a tactical goal. In the realities of high-level management, the ability to distinguish an operational error from a strategic disaster determines an organization's survival in a VUCA environment. Leaders often fall into the trap of perceiving withdrawal from an unprofitable project as a personal defeat, whereas in reality, it is a success of rational judgment that protects the company's critical resources. Another pillar of effectiveness is rigorous adherence to the hierarchy of experience—the Polish school of Himalayan mountaineering teaches that skipping stages of competence development drastically increases the risk of a critical error. Sustainable organizational growth requires an evolutionary building of resilience, rather than revolutionary leaps into unknown areas without an adequate process foundation. A true High Performance Team operates on a foundation of solidarity, where taking care of a partner's safety is more important than an individual bonus for results. A reliable risk analysis and the acceptance that retreat is part of the strategy allow for building an organization capable of undertaking challenges repeatedly, instead of burning resources all at once in the name of ill-conceived ambition.
